§ 15-3. Firefighters' and Police Officers' Civil Service Law.

  • (a)

    Adoption of civil service. On May 6, 1995, the qualified voters of the city voted to adopt Chapter 143 of the Texas Government Code, Firefighter's and Police Officer's Civil Service Law. There is hereby established a civil service system for firemen and policemen.

    (b)

    Appointment of director. Chapter 143 of the Texas Government Code requires that the commission shall appoint a civil service director. It is hereby established that the personnel coordinator of the city shall perform the duties of civil service director upon confirmation by the civil service commission. Said director shall follow Chapter 143 in the performance of the duties related to civil service in addition to other personnel duties as assigned by the city.

    (c)

    Classifications. The following job classifications shall be adopted for the purpose of civil service. Such allocated classifications shall be based on the duties and responsibilities of the incumbents of such positions and shall be entered on the official roster maintained by the Firefighter's and Police Officer's Civil Service Commission. The title of the classification shall become the title of the individual positions and shall be used in payrolls submitted to the proper disbursing officer and in requests to the commission.

    The city council, however, reserves the right to designate new classifications, or combine, divide, alter or abolish existing classes, subject only to the provisions of civil service law.
